Are Indulgences Returning To The Catholic Church?

The website Telegraph.co.uk reported today that the Pope is offering indulgences (relief from purgatory) to Catholics who travel to Lourdes (a shrine in France) over the next year. The entire story can be read by clicking here.
Where is the modern day Martin Luther?
Personally, I thought that indulgences were a thing of the distant past. However, after a little research I discovered that this is not the case. In 2005 indulgences were granted to attendees of the Catholic Youth festival World Youth Day.
The Code of Canon Law (1983) addresses indulgences, and can be read by clicking here. Pope John Paul II spoke on indulgences, and his speech can be read by clicking here.
This is yet another example of the Pope placing himself in the position of God. |
